Biography: Prof. Shuhuai YAO is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and a joint faculty member in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. She obtained the B.S. degree in engineering mechanics from Tsinghua University and the Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering from Stanford, followed by the training as a postdoctoral fellow at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. She is a Fellow of HKIE.

Her research interest lies in understanding of micro-/nano-scale transport phenomena and integrating theory and experiments for developing instrumentation and lab on a chip systems. Prof. Yao has published more than 100 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals and international conferences including top journals of her research fields such as Nature Physics, Nature Communications, PNAS, JACS, Sci. Adv., Nano Letters, Lab Chip, etc. She has been featured on MaterialsViews and Women in Nanoscience. She has over 10 grant patents and patent applications. In addition, Prof. Yao co-founded one biotech startup company based on the microfluidic technology she invented and patented at HKUST.
